Why Some Outdoor Rattan Furniture Only Lasts 2–3 Years

Recently, a client contacted us about their outdoor rattan set that was only two to three years old.

At first glance, the furniture still looked presentable from a distance. However, upon closer inspection, the signs of material failure were clear:

  • Synthetic rattan becoming brittle and cracking

  • Noticeable fading and colour inconsistency

  • Weaving starting to loosen

  • Reduced structural tension

  • Early signs of frame stress

For furniture that is relatively new, this level of deterioration is understandably frustrating for any homeowner.

So why does this happen?

Not All “Outdoor Rattan” Is Made for Outdoor Conditions

One of the biggest misconceptions in the market is that all synthetic rattan is suitable for exterior use. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

Outdoor furniture in coastal areas like Strand, Somerset West, and greater Cape Town faces unique environmental challenges:

  • Intense UV exposure

  • Coastal wind

  • Salt in the air

  • Moisture fluctuations

  • Temperature changes

If the materials used are not specifically designed to withstand these conditions, deterioration can happen much sooner than expected.

The Difference Is in the Materials

High-quality outdoor rattan furniture should include:

  • UV-Stabilised Synthetic Rattan

This prevents premature fading, drying, and cracking caused by sun exposure.

  • Powder-Coated Aluminium Frames

Unlike mild steel, aluminium does not rust in coastal environments.

  • Proper Weaving Tension & Technique

Correct weaving ensures structural strength and prevents sagging or loosening over time.

  • Weather-Suitable Cushion Fabrics

Outdoor fabrics should resist moisture and sun damage.

When shortcuts are taken in manufacturing — whether in the grade of rattan used or the framing material — the lifespan of the furniture is significantly reduced.

Can Damaged Rattan Be Restored?

In many cases, yes.
